Yoga for Women – KYM

14-16 October, Perth, 2005

Puberty to menopause in two days!!!

As part of their world fundraising tour for the KYM, we were very privileged to have Menaka Desikachar back in Australia presenting the very important topic “ Yoga for Women”.

Menaka was assisted by Rhada Sundararajan and Nrithya Jagannathan; teachers at the KYM.

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to Yvonne Henderson for hosting Menaka and assistants on the Australian leg of the KYM world tourIt was great to see such a wide range of people from all different yogic backgrounds with varying levels of experience from across Australia come together for this seminar.

Menaka covered the different stages of a woman’s life. By using case studies, we were able to discuss how to evaluate the cause of the problem and look at why and what the appropriate yoga practice would be on a therapeutic level. Topics covered were menstruation, pre/ post pregnancy and menopause.

Rhada managed to not only teach us the basic principals of vedic chanting, but also get a room full of people to chant together and actually keep us in tune!

We learnt mantra puspam and it’s meaning- a chant said to be effective in preparation for family life and for maintaining a prosperous home. We had the opportunity to feel first hand, the benefits of chanting. It was quite an experience to close your eyes and feel the wonderful vibration and energy we were all creating together.

Chanting not only helps with focussing the mind, but also has a strong influence on the breath, heart rate and general wellbeing.

Chanting is an effective healing tool that can be used at many different stages of our life.

Nrithya presented varying asana practices which allowed everyone to explore the different impact of regulating the breath, using chanting in asana and different techniques and hand mudras for pranayama.

I was fortunate enough to attend both the Queenscliiff and Perth seminars, and I can’t help but celebrate how great it is to be part of a sanga that is so supportive in their study of the teachings of Krishnamacharya. It enhances and enriches my life journey as a yoga student.

“Thank you” to all of you.

Queenscliff Retreat
10- 11, September, 2005

Queenscliff, is a wonderful place to get together for a retreat. We all enjoyed the road trip there and back to Melbourne, and the group that shared in this workshop got along really well. There was a lot to cover, but we managed to squeeze it all in…..we even had time for some chanting with Asa

Barbara presented a guide to Chapter 2 of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra which we found very insightful. It was great to be able to go through the sutras in this kind of forum. I find in my study of this ancient text, each sutra has so many layers, the deeper you explore, so much more is revealed.

The guide included sutras to discipline the mind; tools that can be used, the klesa’s and the 8 limbs of yoga. We were able to walk away from this seminar with a useful study guide that can help us with our own yoga sutra studies.

A vital part of the retreat was the experience of asana, pranayama and meditation practices that gave us the opportunity to explore the power of the breath and its impact on our state of mind.

We are fortunate to have Barbara here in Melbourne, sharing what she has been taught by the Desikachar family in Chennai.

It was a great weekend. I’m looking forward to more Yoga Sutra workshops in the future.

Next Workshop is also in Queenscliff. Click here if you would like to see the details.
